After communicating with HeadHunter, he suggested that I formally present my ideas about mod support on the forum. I am very grateful to him for providing this communication channel. This is a conceptual proposal for introducing official mod support, whose core advantage lies in simple technical implementation and low development threshold. It is hoped to provide a feasible direction for the long-term development of the game.
1. Core Value: Why Do We Need Official Mod Support?
As HeadHunter mentioned in his reply, game development is a lengthy process. Official mod support is precisely the best strategy to achieve sustainable content growth, extend the game’s lifecycle, and coalesce community creativity when the team’s resources are limited.
It has the ability to transform Block Story from a “product” that we play passively into a “platform” co-created by players and developers.
2. Vitality and Potential of the Community
This proposal is not a fantasy; it is built on the strong creativity that the community has already demonstrated:
– Russian Community: Player Anton Belyakov has released a mod for the PC version that adds new weapons and new mechanics, and this mod has been liked by HeadHunter himself. This fully proves the technical feasibility and the enthusiasm of the community.
– Chinese Community: On platforms like Bilibili, creators are also continuously producing and sharing mod contents such as terrain editors and new creatures, with a single video receiving thousands of views. Meanwhile, some players also adjust game recipes by modifying local files.
The current situation is very clear: the wheel of the community is already spinning spontaneously, but there is currently a lack of official guidance and a safe and convenient platform.
3. Implementation Plan: How to Launch with Minimum Risk?
We recommend adopting a phased and low-threshold launch approach, prioritizing risk and control:
– Phase 1: JSON Data Mods (Safe, Fast, Core)
– Content: Allow players to add new items, crafting recipes, and adjust creature attributes and values by editing JSON files.
– Why It’s Safe:
– It does not touch or modify the game’s core code (C#).
– It is designed in a way that cannot modify core economic data such as diamonds and save files, making it absolutely safe.
– The main task of the development team is to provide a set of standardized JSON format specifications and reading logic.
– Phase 2: Platformization and Advanced Features (Future Outlook)
– Establish an official mod website to facilitate players to upload, download, rate, and manage mods.
– Integrate a simple mod manager into the game to enable one-click enabling or disabling.
– When conditions are ripe in the future, the possibility of supporting more advanced scripts (such as Lua) can be evaluated.
4. Expected Benefits
– For Players: Gain nearly infinite new content, making the gaming experience always fresh.
– For Creators: Obtain an official, safe, and recognized creative stage, stimulating a sense of accomplishment.
– For the Development Team:
– Greatly enrich the game content and effectively relieve the pressure of the official continuous content output.
– Significantly improve player retention and the perceived value of the game, providing a solid reason for future business decisions (such as price adjustments).
– Establish a healthy and self-growing player ecosystem, injecting long-term vitality into the game.
5. Conclusion and Supplement
We fully understand that game development requires time and patience. This proposal aims to provide a promising development direction for the future of Block Story.
In addition, I have already made a preliminary outline of the possible problems and solutions during the implementation process. If the team is interested in this proposal, I am more than happy to provide more detailed ideas in the follow-up.
Thank you to HeadHunter and Xcellorator for everything they have done for the game. No matter when this idea is considered, we will continue to support the development of Block Story.
