Try to increase creature spawn count in setings, there a lot of mobs spawns underground in caves tha you don’t see. Also you can click spawner to activate it, this can help.

What do you mean to play normally by editing character file? This is considered as cheating. If you have any issues with your character file you can pm your file to me and i will do my best to fix this.

You need to deal most damage by yourself or with pets. If mob get most of his damage from other source like falling damage, fire or from other npc it will not register.
